Flour and Stone

If it’s that French classic flair you’re after, you need to pay a visit to Flour and Stone. Known for their delicious pannacotta lamingtons, flaky croissants and drool-worthy cakes, this petite bakery has earnt a top spot in this blog as one of our absolute favourite patisseries in Sydney. They make everything fresh in their kitchen in Woolloomooloo, using ingredients from small growers and producers.

On their pastry menu you can find their iconic croissants made from St David Dairy cultured butter as well as plain au chocolat, cinnamon morning buns and more. They also have a large selection of other delicious freshly baked French goods like cakes, tarts and cookies.

Lode Pies

We’ve mentioned Lode Pies in one of our past blogs about Where to Find the Best Pies in Sydney, but they’re truly masters when it comes to pastry-making… So they deserve a spot in this list. What makes Lode different? Well, they use a creative approach when it comes to viennoiserie and the art of layering butter and dough – they aim to offer “layers of goodness” in each of their products.

For French pastries, you can’t go past their Almond Croissant, made with almond frangipane, poached pear, vanilla cream and orange zest, and their Pain au chocolat, featuring the highest quality Isigny butter and Callebaut chocolate.

Shadow Baking

If you find Shadow Baking at your local food market, don’t hesitate to grab a few of their delectable pastries while you can! We found Shadow Baking at The Cannery Markets one weekend and we are so glad that we did. You can find French classics like croissants, danishes and brioches at their pop up stall, but you need to get in quick before they sell out.

To find out about their movements and catch them at their next pop up, be sure to follow them on Instagram!

A.P Bakery

All Purpose Bakery aka ‘A.P Bakery’ are the newer kids on the block who have definitely made an impact on the Sydney food scene since opening in February 2022. You can find A.P Bakery on the rooftop of the Paramount House Hotel and at their other location called ‘A.P Town’ in Newtown. It’s safe to say that this bakery has become the go-to place for fresh French bread, savoury meals and treats for the locals. They also pop up at the Carriageworks Markets every Saturday morning.

If you’re heading to A.P Bakery, you can’t leave without trying their freshly baked buttermilk croissants (we highly suggest you grab some to take home too). Plus, if you’re looking for a sweet treat, try their heavenly whisky canele which is a small French pastry flavoured with whisky, has a luscious soft custard centre and a delectable caramelised crust.

Café de la Fontaine

Step into a piece of France at Café de la Fontaine. This beautiful space features a Parisian-style interior filled with a curated selection of French antiques to give you that Parisian feel in the heart of Potts Point. Café de la Fontaine is more than a French patisserie, it’s also a popular creperie, French ice creamery and an antique store.

We highly recommend their range of delicious éclairs, which are a light choux pastry filled with a seasonal variety of crème pâtissier – if you’re having trouble picking a flavour (because they all look SO good), opt for the mixed box or mini mixed box! Or if you’re looking for something that’ll impress your guests at your next event, bring one of their classic French tarts like the Tarte aux Framboises – a fresh raspberry tart that’s finished with 24k gold leaf for that luxurious presentation.

Lavie & Belle

“La vie est faite de petis bonheurs” (translates to “life is made of small pleasures”) – this is written on the back wall of this French bakery and these words are definitely reflected in their crispy baguettes and creamy patisseries. Their passionate team bake something new every week and they also offer fresh baguettes, a massive range of freshly made patisseries and viennoiseries every single day.

Their range includes French classics like madeleines, macarons and lemon meringues. Lavie & Belle also create more indulgent desserts, like their 3 Chocolate Entremet. If we had to pick one of our favourites, it would be their decadent Peanut Macaron, which has caramelised peanuts, peanut shell and peanut cream.
