The October 2024 Spanish floods refers to a natural disaster that took place in late-October 2024, where torrential rain brought over a month's worth of rain to several areas in southeastern Spain, including to the Valencia region. The resulting floodwaters caused the deaths of at least 51 people, with several more reported as missing.
Background
[edit]Large number of floods have been recorded in Valencia, from 1321 up to recent history with the 1957 Valencia flood caused by a 3-day cold drop, resulting in significant overflowing of the Túria river and resulting in at least 81 fatalities. In response to the disaster, the Cortes Españolas approved a plan to reroute the Turia to the south of Valencia, three kilometres from its original course.[1]
Flooding
[edit]Starting on 29 October 2024, a cold drop brought drastic flash flooding to southeastern Spain, primarily in the Valencia region. The resulting floodwaters caused the deaths of at least 51 people, with several more reported as missing. The flooding also caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure, sweeping away roads and cars while also derailing a high-speed rail train carrying nearly 300 people, resulting in no injuries.[2]
Several videos taken of flash flooding showed civilians holding onto trees to resist the flood's rapid flow, with thirty people in Letur being trapped by floodwaters.[2]
